Computer Vision FAQs

What is Computer Vision Syndrome?

This is the name given to a group of symptoms that happen when you have been on a computer, tablet, or another digital device for too long. It is not a disease.

Does Computer Vision Syndrome Have Another Name?

It is also called digital eye strain or computer eye strain.

What are the Symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome?

The symptoms appear after you have been looking at a digital screen for hours and usually get better after you get off of the device. The symptoms include:

  • Pain in the eyes
  • Red eyes
  • Dry or itchy eyes
  • Eyelids that feel very heavy
  • Headache
  • Pain in the neck
  • Pain in the shoulders

Does This Mean I Can No Longer Use a Computer?

People often need to use a computer for many hours per day for work or school. By making some changes and by visiting an optometry clinic, you can reduce the symptoms of computer vision syndrome and put in the time you need on the computer.

Can Children Get Computer Vision Syndrome?

Computer eye strain can happen to people of all ages. Children need regular breaks from digital screens. If the symptoms are interfering with daily life, then the child needs to see a pediatric optometrist or family practice eye doctor.

What Can I Do Now for Computer Vision Syndrome?

Let’s look at some tips from the American Optometric Association:

  • Increase the font size on your computer to make everything larger and easier for your eyes to process.
  • Sit so that you are looking level at the screen.
  • Try using more light in your room.
  • Take a 20-second break every 20 minutes to look at something about 20 feet away, or across the room, or even out of a window.
  • Use an anti-glare filter screen on your computer.
