Specialty Eye Exams

At SoCal Optometry, Dr. Mirone is dedicated to providing the highest quality of personalized eye care, delivered with the latest eye care technology, products, and services. Most people will need professional eye care at some point in life. The majority of optometry patients will require only a visual acuity assessment to be fitted for glasses. But those with certain conditions such as Keratoconus, who need to be fitted with scleral contact lenses, will require a specialty eye exam for a proper and complete diagnosis. If you need a specialty eye exam for Keratoconus or scleral contact lenses and have asked “Is there a specialty exam eye doctor near me?” SoCal Optometry in Riverside, CA, offers the care you need.

Specialty Eye Exams for Scleral Lenses

Patients with Keratoconus have irregularly shaped corneas. For these individuals, ordinary eyeglasses and contacts do not conform to the shape of the eye and cannot provide proper accurate vision correction or adequate comfort. To meet the needs of those with Keratoconus, scleral lenses have been developed. Scleral lenses help those with corneal irregularities to enjoy improved visual acuity and superior comfort.

Keratoconus can be diagnosed using a specialty eye exam. Dr. Mirone will examine the patient’s cornea and measure its curvature to craft custom-fitted lenses that will provide full and accurate vision correction and optimal comfort.

Treatment for Keratoconus

Not every instance of Keratoconus presents in the same way. This condition is best treated with consideration for the various symptoms it may present. With a mild case, specially fitted scleral lenses will provide the necessary vision correction and comfort. In time, these patients may need specially fitted, hardened scleral contact lenses. With more severe cases of Keratoconus, Dr. Mirone may treat the condition with one or more of the following techniques:

  • Corneal transplant: When Keratoconus symptoms are severe, Dr. Mirone may suggest a corneal transplant. In this procedure, all or part of the cornea will be replaced using healthy donor cornea tissue.
  • Intacs: An Intac is a small, curved device that is surgically implanted in the cornea. These devices will help to flatten the curvature of the cornea and improve vision.
  • Collagen cross-linking: A specialized UV light and eye drops are used to fortify the cornea. This helps to stiffen and/or flatten the cornea, preventing it from bulging further.
