Eye and Vision Exam

How Often Should I Schedule an Optometry Checkup?

It is generally recommended that you come in at least on an annual basis when you are over the age of forty or wear glasses or contacts. However, your optometrist may ask that you come in more frequently, depending on your situation. Your yearly examination allows you to be checked for any degradation to your eyesight that may necessitate an update to your eyeglasses prescription.

If you are older, you may need to be seen more often, as your vision will tend to degenerate more rapidly later in life. It's also recommended to bring children in for a yearly appointment to track proper development.

What Symptoms Prompt an Optometrist Visit?

You may need to request an eye examination if your eyesight is distorted by blurriness, as an early diagnosis of conditions like macular degeneration or glaucoma can help preserve your ability to see in the long term. If you have headaches or migraines, images are distorted, or if you're having trouble with depth perception and reacting to visual stimuli, SoCal of Riverside will be happy to see you.

Your eyes may be puffy or dry, or they may feel tired. There may also be swelling, or you may be seeing spots throughout your vision. These may also appear as halos or as a prism. If you're dealing with any of these issues or are in pain, don't hesitate to contact your optometrist to schedule an exam.

How Long Does an Optometry Visit Last?

Typically, the entire process should take no more than forty minutes for a routine exam. This is assuming that there are no major conditions or a new diagnosis to make, as your optometrist will want to spend some time performing a thorough analysis. Expect to need at least a few more minutes to select lenses if you need new glasses.

Usually, you can expect an optometrist to have you read an eye chart, photograph your retinas, check your eye pressure, and look at the structures in your eye looked at under magnification. Additionally, there will be a conversation about any concerns or symptoms you are experiencing.
