Dry Eyes

Lifestyle changes

Lifestyle changes, such as staying hydrated, blinking frequently, and limiting alcohol consumption, may also help alleviate symptoms like blurry vision. Your age, diet, and health can all affect how dry eye symptoms manifest. Additionally, certain medications can exacerbate dry eye symptoms.

Use contact lenses

Soft contact lenses, especially daily disposables, are recommended for those with dry eyes. These contacts feature a unique silicone hydrogel that helps reduce redness, swelling of the cornea, dryness, and corneal infections. Rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lenses can also relieve dry eye symptoms; however, prolonged wear can lead to discomfort.

Light therapy

Light therapy, also known as circadian light therapy, bright light therapy, or phototherapy, is another treatment for dry eyes. This involves sitting in front of a specialized device that emits light similar to the sun's natural rays. Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy utilizes gentle bursts of light to address the underlying causes of dry eye disease. It is a fast, safe, and comfortable procedure.

Unblocking oil glands

Clogged oil glands can lead to dry eyes. When the Meibomian glands become clogged, they secrete a thicker and less efficient oil than usual, leading to symptoms of dry eye such as crusty discharge or itching eyes. Our optometrist can diagnose clogged oil glands using Meibography, a high-definition color camera that displays the delicate structures of the tear film. While you are at our Houston, TX, family eye care clinic, we will also measure the height of the tear meniscus and lipid layer and evaluate tear production using filter paper strips.

Closing the tear ducts to minimize tear loss

Tears drain from your eyes through a tiny hole (punctum) on each upper and lower eyelid. This opening is part of the tear drainage system, including the nasolacrimal duct. Blockages in the tear duct can lead to excess tears that accumulate on your cheek, even when you are not crying. This leads to blurry vision and may lead to other eye issues like infection. Treatments can help open or bypass a blocked duct, restoring normal tear flow. Some treatments use tiny plugs or surgical procedures to close off these ducts.
